With the latest release of the Yeti Hopper M30, which will go on to replace the Hopper TWO range of coolers, let’s have a look back on some of Yeti’s older products and when they came out.
When Did the Yeti Hopper Come Out?
The Yeti Hopper was Yeti’s first soft sided cooler and it was first released in October 2014 and set a new standard in soft sided coolers.
Yeti Hopper Release Date: October 2014
It featured a waterproof zipper, 2-3 days of ice retention and a shoulder strap for easy carrying.
The Hopper was a new breed of cooler, with the toughness and durability you would expect from a Yeti product but with the portability of a smaller cooler.
It came in one size (30-Quart) and in 2 colors – Fog Grey and Field Tan.
It was discontinued in 2017 when the Yeti Hopper TWO came out.

When Did The Yeti Hopper TWO Come Out?
The Yeti Hopper TWO came out in March 2017 and was sold in 3 different sizes – 20, 30 + 40.
Yeti Hopper TWO Release Date: March 1, 2017
Improvements on the original Hopper included moving the zipper from a centered position on the top of the cooler to a position on the side of the cooler near the top. This allowed the cooler top to open further giving customers easier access to the contents of their cooler.
Yeti also added their Hitchpoint Grid system to the Hopper TWO which is a threaded system similar to MOLLE, allowing customers to add accessories to their cooler.
It was released in 2 colors – Fog Grey and Field Tan.
The Hopper TWO 20 and Hopper TWO 40 were discontinued in June of 2018 and the Hopper TWO 30 was discontinued in Fall of 2019 when the Hopper M30 was released for sale.
You can still purchase these coolers from Amazon but now that there are rarer you either need to buy second hand or pay a hefty premium.

When Did The Yeti Hopper M30 Come Out?
The Yeti Hopper M30 came out on August 22nd, 2019 and was a big redesign fixing some of the major issues with the original Hopper and the Hopper TWO.
Yeti Hopper M30 Release Date: August 22, 2019
The Hopper M30 has a completely redesigned lid mechanism that replaced the old watertight zipper that customers complained about due to zipper being hard to use, breaking and not giving you good access to the cooler.
Now instead of zipper the M30 uses magnets in the top to create a close. The top then fold down and clips into place so it remains watertight.
This allowed for a wider opening to load and unload your cooler and also allowed Yeti to fit in more insulation to give the cooler 20% long ice retention.
The Hopper M30 was released in 3 colors – Charcoal, River Green and Navy. You can read my full Yeti Hopper M30 review here.

Why Did Yeti Change The Hopper?
Yeti has redesigned the Hopper two times as well as adding the rectangular Hopper Flip range as well as the BackFlip range of soft sided coolers. Why did Yeti change the Hopper and what benefits does this resign offer?
The first redesign from the original Hopper to the Hopper Two simply changed the position of the zipper from top centre to top side, this allowed the cooler to open further giving you more access into the cooler which was a major customer complaint about the first version.
The other change was the addition of Yeti’s Hitchpoint Grid, which allows customers to attach Yeti accessories like bottle openers and other items to the side of their coolers.
The second resign (the M30) removed the zipper altogether and replaced with with magnetic strips at the top. This allowed the top to open 50% wider giving you way more access into the cooler for loading and unloading.
It also meant that they could take away the waterproof zipper which was hard to open, needed constant lubrication and often broke.
The new opening also allowed Yeti to add more insulation to the cooler increasing the ice retention by approximately 20%.
But the M30 isn’t perfect and a lot of customers are currently complaining that the magnetic lid doesn’t stay open for loading making it even more difficult to load and unload the cooler than the previous versions. So I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Yeti change this product again in the future.
When Did The Yeti Hopper Flip Come Out?
The Yeti Hopper Flip came out in August 2016 and originally just came in the 12 size and was then expanded to include the smaller 8 size and the larger size 18.
Yeti Hopper Flip Release Date: August, 2016
The Yeti Hopper Flip had a similar design to the Yeti Hopper soft sided cooler with one major major change, they were rectangular in shape.
This meant the lid could completely open giving you full access to the inside of the cooler.
It came with a shoulder strap and was released in 2 colors – Fog Grey and Field Tan.

When Did The Yeti BackFlip Come Out?
The Yeti BackFlip was Yeti’s first backpack cooler and was released in May 2018 and was quickly rated as one of the best backpack coolers on the market. Read my Yeti BackFlip review.
Yeti Hopper BackFlip Release Date: May, 2018
The Yeti BackFlip is a lot like a Hopper Flip only it is taller and thinner in design and rather than having a shoulder strap it has backpack straps as well as 2 side handles for carrying.
It also featured the Yeti Hitchpoint Grid on the front which was perfect for adding the SideKick Dry to give people external dry storage if they wanted it.
It came out in one size (the BackFlip 24) and in 2 colors – Fog Grey and Charcoal.

The Hopper TWO 20 and 40 sizes were discontinued in June 2018 and the 30 size was discontinued in late 2019 when the new Hopper M30 cooler was released.
