The Ember Mug is a battery powered heated coffee mug that keeps your coffee at exactly the right temperature. But what exactly is the Ember Mug made of?
What materials do they use to make the Ember Mug and are they durable and long lasting?
What Is The Ember Mug Made Of?
The Ember Mug is made from 18/8 Kitchen Grade stainless steel with an FDA food grade ceramic reinforced coating so no flavors are imparted into your drink.
My best friend is extremely sensitive to stainless steel imparting flavors into drinks. She hates any mugs, tumblers or bottles that have a stainless steel interior. Even in a blind test she's able to tell which drink has been in a stainless steel mug and which hasn't.
I've tested the Ember Mug with her and she was unable to taste the difference. This tells me that the ceramic lining does in fact work and it tastes just like drinking from a regular ceramic mug.

Jerry Rig Everything did a great tear down of the Ember Travel Mug where you can see inside it and see exactly what it's made of which is really cool.
Does The Ember Travel Mug Have a Ceramic Lining?
I only own the smaller Ember Mug so I reached out to Ember support to confirm this as I couldn't find any photos of the inside of an Ember Travel Mug and here's what they said.
This could be a deal breaker for some people but I know other people would much prefer the larger size and the fact that the Ember Travel Mug has a leak proof lid making and longer battery life.

What Kind Of Battery Does The Ember Mug Use?
The Ember Mug uses dual lithium ion batteries to provide it with power and the ability to run the heating element it uses to heat your drink.
The Ember Travel Mug contains a larger battery than the Ember Mug. The Ember Travel Mug uses a 2V/1120mAh (17Wh) battery from EVE. However you cannot replace the Ember Mug battery without first breaking the Ember Mug completely.
Does The Ceramic Come Off The Ember Mug?
While it's not extremely common it is possible for the ceramic coating to delaminate or chip off the Ember Mug.
This is more common with the original versions of the Ember Mug and is less common with the upgraded Ember Mug 2 but it still does happen occassionally.
Luckily this is covered under warranty and from the reports I have seen Ember has great customer service and will replace any Ember Mug where the ceramic has come off.
If you're looking to buy an Ember Mug make sure you get the Ember Mug 2 so this issue is less likely. Plus getting the newer version also gives you 1.5 hours of battery life instead of just 1 hour.
