How To Clean An Ember Mug Properly

I recently got an Ember Mug for my birthday and made the mistake of leaving my coffee in it overnight and now it needs a good clean.

But how do you clean an Ember Mug properly and how do you avoid breaking it whilst cleaning it?

To clean an Ember Mug hand wash with detergent in warm water with a soft cloth and dry well before charging. DO NOT put in the dishwasher, soak in the sink or use abrasive cleaners on your Ember Mug. For tough stains soak water in the mug.

Really cleaning an Ember Mug is pretty simple. It's more just about avoiding the things you shouldn't do and cleaning it on a regular basis so it doesn't build up bad smells or get stained.

However, none of use are perfect (me included) and sometimes we need to know how to clean an Ember Mug well after leaving it long than we should have between cleans.

Ember Mug Is Hand Wash Only

When it comes to cleaning your Ember Mug you need to make sure you hand wash you Ember Mug taking care not to wet the outside of the mug too much.

For me I run hot water and use a dish wand that has detergent in it and this cleans my mug fairly well.

If you don't have a dish wand then I suggest squirting a little bit of detergent directly into your Ember Mug and then clean out with a soft cloth.

Don't use abrasive cleaner as this can scratch off the ceramic that the mug is lined with.

I made a video showing you exactly how I clean my Ember Mug. Watch that below:

To To Clean Tough Stains From Your Ember Mug

If you have tough stains from tea, coffee or other beverages how do you clean them out of your Ember Mug?

Over time stains can build up on your Ember Mug, especially if you purchased the white one. I have a black one so I don't have to worry too much but even that black one can start to get stained or have coffee oil built up.

You have to be careful removing hard stains from the Ember Mug as you don't want to scratch off the ceramic so you can't use any abrasive cleaners and I also try to avoid using chemicals that are too harsh.

Leave It To Soak

One of the best ways to remove tough stains or caked on coffee is to fill up your Ember Mug with water and a bit of detergent and leave it to sit.

Funnily the Ember Mug will detect liquid and will keep it hot, making your soaking more effective.

After 30-60 minutes tip out the water and wash your Ember Mug as you usually would with detergent and a soft cloth.

Use Cafiza Coffee Cleaner

If the simple soak and wash method doesn't work then consider getting some Cafiza.

Cafiza is commonly used in cafes to clean all types of coffee machines and parts and it can work great on your Ember Mug too. It's also available from Amazon and one container will last you years!

It's made from trisodium phosphate which is extremely powerful at removing tough stains.

The great thing about this is that it doesn't react with ceramic or stainless steel (which Ember Mugs are made from) and it also can remove stains without abrasive cleaning.

To clean your Ember Mug with Cafiza simply add 1-2 grams of Cafiza to your Ember Mug and fill it with hot water.

Leave to soak for 30 minutes and then rinse out.

At this point you might want to give your mug a good scrub with a soft cloth to remove any especially tough stains.

Repeat this ever so often to stop stains from building up.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

For a more natural approach cleaning your Ember Mug with baking soda and white vinegar can help to remove any stains and smells that have built up over time.

How NOT To Clean Your Ember Mug

When it comes down to it cleaning your Ember Mug is fairly simple. But there are a few common cleaning mistakes that can spell disaster for your Ember Mug and break it completely.

Do Not Place Ember Mug In The Dishwasher

One of the biggest no-nos when it comes to cleaning your Ember Mug is putting it in the dishwasher.

The Ember Mug contains electrics and it is NOT waterproof on the outside.

If you place it in the dishwasher the amounts of water, water pressure and high heat can completely break your mug turning into just a really expensive normal mug.

If you want a heated mug that can go in the dishwasher then check out my list of Ember Mug alternatives. There is a mug on that list called the Glowstone Mug that has wireless charging and is completely dishwasher proof.

Don't Soak Ember Mug In The Sink (Or Clean In a Sink Full of Water)

While you might be inclined to soak your Ember Mug to remove tough stains you want to make sure you don't put it in a sink full of water to soak.

Remember the Ember Mug is not completely waterproof so soaking it can allow water to get into the electronics and break your expensive mug.

If you want to soak it simply fill up with mug itself with water and leave on the bench to soak.

Don't Use Abrasive Cleaner on Your Ember Mug

Ember Mugs are made from stainless steel and are lined with ceramic.

Using an abrasive cleaner like steel wool on your Ember Mug can cause the ceramic to chip off exposing the stainless steel underneath.

While this isn't completely bad (drinking from stainless steel is totally fine) it isn't something you want to do.

Stick to softer cloths and sponges instead and use other methods like those mentioned above to clean tough stains or smells from your Ember Mug.
