Takeya have a wide range of bottles and my favorite is the Sport bottle, which keeps my water cold at the gym and doesn’t leak into my bag. They also have stainless steel and glass bottles, tumblers, shakers and coffee mugs.
One thing I’m not always great at though is washing my bottle everyday as recommended. I much prefer to be able to throw my bottles in the dishwasher at night with the dishes as it’s super easy.
But can you throw your Takeya bottle in the dishwasher with the rest of your dishes, or should you wash it by hand?
Takeya bottles are dishwasher safe and perfectly fine to be washed in the dishwasher. However, it’s recommended that you handwash your bottles as the excessive heat, high water pressure and harsh detergents in your dishwasher can cause the powder coated paint to fade (which isn’t covered by warranty).
Your bottle will still work fine, just over time the external paint may start to fade or scratch or chip off making your bottle look more used than it otherwise might.
The only Takeya bottles that are NOT dishwasher safe are the painted bottles. This includes the brushed stainless steel, rose gold and slate bottles only.
Takeya bottles are backed by a lifetime warranty and the dishwasher should not affect the vacuum insulation of the bottle. If your bottle does somehow lose it’s vacuum insulation due to the dishwasher or any other reason Takeya will cover this under their warranty and will replace the bottle for you.
Even though your Takeya bottle is safe to clean in the dishwasher, does that mean you should?
How can you ensure your bottle stays clean without impacting it or shortening its lifespan?
What Happens If You Put Your Takeya Bottle in the Dishwasher?
If you put your Takeya bottle in the dishwasher, it should come out sparkling clean (unless you have a painted bottle which outside can be impacted).
Just make sure you take the lid off, open up the spout and place the lid on the top rack of your dishwasher.
Place the bottle upside down in the dishwasher so that the water jets can get inside there and clean everything properly. If your Takeya bottle is placed in the dishwasher upright it won’t get clean as it’ll just pool with water.
How To Clean Your Takeya Bottle
When cleaning your favourite Takeya bottle, handwash daily. A daily wash with warm water and soap is essential if it’s used with anything other than water to keep it mould and germ-free. Wash semi-regularly in the dishwasher if you’d like.
I personally like and recommend this 3-in-1- bottle brush cleaner from Amazon as the long handle bottle brush is great for cleaning the inside of the bottle and the smaller brushes are great for cleaning the lid spout and gasket area.
Three tools in one. Includes a long bottle brush, straw brush and detail cleaner (great for cleaning inside lid gaskets). Comes with organizer ring and storage hook,
I personally only put my bottle in the dishwasher about once a week (or if I’ve used a smoothie in it) and otherwise I hand wash it.
This is because I know that over time and many many cycles through the dishwasher the external powder coated paint can begin to fade from the heat, water pressure and chemicals used in the dishwasher.
So I handwash mostly, then throw it in the dishwasher when it needs a bit of a deep clean.
However, if it starts to smell a bit funky this could indicate some mold growing in your bottle and you should treat the mold inside your bottle with vinegar or some other mold killer.
If you find a buildup of film or cloudiness in your bottle from hard water deposits or from drinks other than water then sometimes I bottle brush or the dishwasher won’t do the trick. You can use these techniques to clean a cloudy water bottle or one with sediments/film stuck inside or you can use these techniques that clean a narrow mouth bottle but work great in the Takeya too.
Takeya Dishwashing Instructions
When cleaning your Takeya bottle in the dishwasher, take some precautions to ensure the life of the bottle isn’t impacted. Follow these dishwashing instructions.
Remove the Lid
With Takeya bottles, the lid is the most delicate part, so remove it before washing and follow the specific instructions for cleaning.
Here are some specific instructions from Takeya on how to wash your bottle, including the lid, depending on which bottle you have:
- Actives Spout
- Actives Straw
- Originals Spout
- Traveler Coffe Mug
- 24oz Straw Tumbler
- Motivational
- Tritian Straw
Place Lid On The Top Rack
To avoid the potential negative impacts of the heat in the dishwasher, wash the lid on the top rack. Also, consider washing on a gentle cycle to further reduce the heat risk.
Place Bottle Upside Down in Your Dishwasher
It’s important that your bottle is placed upside down in your dishwasher so the water jets can get in there and clean the inside.
Avoid Harsh Detergents
Use a gentle, environmentally-friendly dishwashing detergent for your Takeya bottle. Harsh chemicals may cause damage or impact the look of your bottle.
Skip the Dry Cycle
The dishwasher’s dry cycle adds unnecessary heat; consider skipping the dry cycle and letting your Takeya bottle air dry.
Let the bottle dry completely before reassembling or putting it back on the lid.
